California HVAC Rebates in 2026: Heat Pump and AC Incentives

A New HVAC System Is a Big Investment, Rebates Make It More Manageable

Replacing your AC or heating system in California costs $4,000 to $12,000 or more, depending on system type and complexity. That’s a meaningful hit for most homeowners.

California offers more rebate programs for HVAC upgrades than almost any other state. Between state programs, utility company incentives, and federal tax credits, you can often recover $2,000 to $5,000 of the total cost on a qualifying system.

In this article, we explain the main rebate programs available in 2026 for Southern California homeowners replacing HVAC equipment, what qualifies, and how to access these programs through your Reliable Home Comfort installation.

Federal Tax Credits for HVAC Equipment

The federal Inflation Reduction Act energy efficiency tax credits provide up to 30% of the cost, up to $2,000, for qualifying heat pump installations. Central AC upgrades that meet ENERGY STAR efficiency thresholds can qualify for up to $600 in tax credits.

These are tax credits, not deductions. A $2,000 credit reduces your tax bill by $2,000. That’s real money, and it applies to installations completed through 2032.

Qualifying equipment must meet specific efficiency thresholds. For heat pumps, this typically means SEER2 ratings of 15.2 or higher and HSPF2 ratings of 7.5 or higher.

TECH Clean California: Heat Pump Rebates

The TECH Clean California initiative provides point-of-sale rebates for heat pump installations statewide. Rebates vary by income level:

  • Standard income: up to $1,000 for qualifying heat pump HVAC systems
  • Moderate income (80 to 150% Area Median Income): up to $2,500
  • Low income (under 80% AMI): up to $4,000 or 100% of installation costs

These rebates apply at the time of installation. You don’t wait for a tax refund. The installer applies the rebate directly to your invoice.

Utility Rebates: SCE and SoCalGas

Southern California Edison (SCE) and SoCalGas both offer rebates for qualifying HVAC equipment.

SCE currently offers rebates of $200 to $1,000 for central AC and heat pump installations that meet efficiency thresholds. SoCalGas offers rebates for high-efficiency furnaces rated at 95% AFUE or higher, typically in the $150 to $500 range.

Rebate amounts and qualifying equipment change annually. We verify current incentives for each installation and ensure your equipment qualifies before the work begins.
